How's everyone doing? Am I the only one in shock that it's already mid-March? *gasp!! Where is 2018 flying to??
Anyway, I have a pretty interesting treat for you folks today. It's a review of an app that I've been using lately. One fine day as I was dreading heading to the gym, I received an email from the Aaptiv team. They asked me to try out their app, using their 30-day free trial. Now, I knew that Aaptiv was a working out app, but I didn't know anything else about it; what made it unique and why I would want to keep using it. I have used Bodyspace by Bodybuilding.com, which is a great app for weight training. However, I'm at that point in my fitness journey where going to the gym and working out alone, has become quite a boring experience. Do you guys ever experience this? Just an overall lack of motivation? No drive to really push yourself- out of sheer boredom? Yawn
To add to that, I've been traveling tons for work lately- pretty much all weekdays. This means that my workouts are restricted to the small, often empty hotel gyms, or exercise videos from my bedroom floor. So you can imagine, boredom galore! I'm no longer able take my weekly Zumba or Bikram yoga classes that I looked forward to.
If finances and my schedule permitted, I would definitely have a full-time personal trainer, who would train me 3-4 times a week. For the remaining 1-2 days, I would probably take a group class, be it Zumba, Bikram yoga or a Pilates machine session. I generally find that personal trainers or group classes always help me break past that mental barrier and push me to give my workouts everything. Also, I have more fun playing off the energy of others. One day when I have all the time and money in the world, this will be my workout routine.
Until then, Aaptiv has managed to somewhat fill that void. Using this app has helped me feel as though I have a personal trainer or I'm in a group fitness class. Here's why:
1. Variety of workouts
The first thing that struck me about this app, is its variety or workouts. Whatever workout you desire to perform, you literally have access to it on this application. From running on the treadmill to running outdoors. Training in the gym or training at home. Weights or no weights. Yoga or meditation. Marathon training or 5k training. Stretches and even partner workouts. Furthermore, workout durations vary. You can filter for time (for as little as 5 minutes!), difficulty level or even music genre- yes, the app has built-in music so you don't have to worry about having to find that perfect Spotify playlist. Each class is specifically tailored to meet your personal workout needs and goals. So yeah, this app has managed to solve my boredom issues big time. So far I've tried their running outdoors class, a few meditation classes (trying to do these first thing each morning for good energy each day), their stretching class and a few body weight and dumbbell classes.
2. Fantastic trainers and music
I didn't think that it was possible to connect with a virtual trainer and feel like I was getting that personal interaction. This app has been a great substitute for me as I'm not at a point where I can afford a New York City personal trainer full-time. The Aaptiv audio trainers have so much personality; they're probably as good as a remote trainer can get. They use music to complement their routines, and you can choose classes by music genre- how cool? I'm one of those people who needs good music to get into the zone(my friends laughed when I told them that I listen to some heavy metal stations on Pandora while lifting weights). But hey, a girl needs to stay in the zone, right??!! Aaptiv is great in that they're constantly updating their classes so music definitely stays current to pop culture. The trainers also give helpful tips on form and pace, and motivate you to keep going. The funny thing is that Aaptiv's founder, Ethan Agarwal, was looking for the same things that I was in an app: that motivation of a personal trainer. Just like me, he often traveled for work but found it hard to motivate himself to stay fit. He envisioned an audio personal trainer who would keep things fun and engaging no matter where he was or how much time he had for exercise. So he created this app to satisfy that need. Check out his story here.
3.No gym, no problem!
As I mentioned, I'm on an extended work travel project. At this point, I'm pretty much only in NYC for weekends. Initially, I worried that my fitness progress would really suffer. Basically, all my fancy gym equipment is gone; I'm lucky if I have a hotel gym with a couple of treadmills and dumbbells. Furthermore, I've been working pretty late into the night. Sometimes, all that I have time for is a 15-20 minute workout! This app definitely came at a good time for me because their repository of workouts meets my needs pretty well. I can find dumbell only workouts or some that use body weight. I can do short, fun and upbeat treadmill workouts late into the night. If you're traveling for work or for pleasure, or if you don't have a gym membership (don't worry if you hate the gym and prefer to work out from home/ at a park), I'd definitely say that Aaptiv is very flexible in meeting your personal needs. Whoever you are, whatever gym equipment you may or may not have, however much time you may have in your schedule, Aaptiv has a fun workout for everyone.
